Greater than Gold

gold medalThe Olympic flame was extinguished at the Sochi Olympics on Sunday.  The athletes have since loaded up their equipment and headed for home, while we, the viewers, have returned to our favorite sitcoms, crime dramas, and reality shows.  Chances are, most of us won’t think much about snow sports and ice skating competitions until the winter of 2018.

But before we put these Olympic games completely on ice, take a moment to watch this video from skating gold medal winner, Scott Hamilton. Even if you don’t remember his spectacular Men’s performance in 1984, you’ll likely still recognize his voice as the skating commentator from these, and many previous, winter games.

You may have already picked up his story on social media like I did, but if not, it’s certainly worth 10 minutes of your time.  Please don’t see this as only an inspiring account of another overcomer.  See yourself in his story.  Remember that a life of faith chooses to believe and trust God, whether you can understand His purpose or not. So as you watch, contemplate this question…

What possible purpose does God have for the obstacles in your life?

In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
