“If someone dies, will they live again?” (Job 14:14)
This question posed by Job in the depths of his suffering is far from unique to him. People on every continent, in every era, and in every station of life have wonder about the same thing: Is death the end? Or is there something beyond? How can anyone be certain of that which they can neither see nor feel?
While a variety of religious faiths and countless philosophers have offered their ‘solution’ to the puzzle of life after death, all the theories remained just speculations until the Lord Jesus arrived on earth. His words, punctuated by action, deliver the definitive statement on what happens after a believer dies.
Think about the story of Lazarus. Four days had passed since he died. Hope of healing was gone, and the time for Mary and Martha to move on was upon them. However, in the midst of this desperate situation, Jesus arrived to bring these sisters the unbelievable promise that their “brother would rise again.” (John 11:23) Martha’s hesitation was understandable, so it would be easy to imagine that she had to swallow hard before she choked out the only statement of faith she could muster. “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” (Vs 24)
Jesus answered her by making an astounding proclamation: “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die.” (vs 25) Then He turned aside and underscored this profound claim by calling the dead man out of his tomb, testifying emphatically that He possessed power over life, both physical and spiritual. As astonishing as this miracle must have been, an even greater miracle with a similar meaning but grander scope occurred a short time later when Christ submitted to crucifixion, died, and then walked out of His own tomb three days later.
Jesus Christ spent three years instructing His followers not to fear what lies beyond the grave by promising them that eternal life was found in Him. (John 3:16) Even though He performed amazing and undeniable miracles, the people still struggled to believe. It wasn’t until Jesus fully conquered death by rising from the grave himself that His followers could finally and with total assurance trust that what He said was true.
Jesus triumphed over the ultimate enemy, death, and through belief in His work on the cross, continues to offer life with God that extends beyond the grave. And the wonderful news is that you no longer have to question what will happen to you after you die. The guaranteed promise of resurrection to eternal life can yours the moment you choose to believe. (Rom. 10:9-10)
“Where, O death, is your victory?
Where, O death, is your sting?
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law.
But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
1 Corinthians 15:55-57
