Pearls from Proverbs ~ Seeking Wisdom

My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you,
turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding—
indeed, if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.
Proverbs 2:1-5

A simple search of the word “wisdom” in the book section on Amazon.com will generate over 800,000 results. With 28,000 titles on Business & Money, 6000 in the self-help and personal transformation section, 55,000 on political and social topics, and over 42,000 in the Religion and Spirituality section, it seems wisdom is a topic that draws interest from all types of people. However, without even realizing it, sometimes the subtle and unconscious desire to find wisdom stems from a “what’s in it for me” attitude. That is, people are looking for the right combination to dial in order to prosper in life.

However, instead of appealing to the ‘me-first’ motivation that has permeated humanity since Eden, Proverbs 2 corrects that errant thinking. God desires for us to seek the real (and most valuable) fruit of a life devoted to pursuing the wisdom found in His Word.

Verse 5 lifts our eyes above any short term benefits that may come from knowing what, when and how to do things and points us instead to loftier spiritual goals. While a temporary edge might gained or band-aid applied to an emotional wound by listening to modern gurus, any “benefits” not gained by a studious and diligent application of Biblical truth will be at best temporal. The enduring result God desires is not primarily what you get! It is not primarily about your happiness or the things that profit you in this life.  Instead, He knows that only through your earnest pursuit of wisdom, understanding and godly insight can you personally know and gain a solid understanding of the awesomeness of your God.   And THAT is the only kind of wisdom that will truly sustain you in this life… and the life to come.

  1. Terrific words Karen. THANKS!
I wrote a One Act play several years ago pertaining to WISDOM & UNDERSTANDING entitled “A Fool’s Choice” based on Proverbs 8 & 9. Your words brought back some thoughts:
“Whoever finds me [WISDOM] finds life and draws forth and obtains favor from the Lord” (Prov. 8:35). How do you find “wisdom” and “favor”? By listening, watching daily, and waiting! (verse 34).

  2. Karen, I loved this! Proverbs is full of wisdom we can depend on. I really loved this thought -“The enduring result God desires is not primarily what you get! It is not primarily about your happiness or the things that profit you in this life. Instead, He knows that only through your earnest pursuit of wisdom, understanding and godly insight can you personally know and gain a solid understanding of the awesomeness of your God.” Thanks for sharing with Thankful Thursdays.

  3. Great post, it time we stop being self-centered and start focusing on the one that really matter. It is definitely all about pursuing God, He is all that matters.
