Light Bulb!

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and found it hard to navigate your way around in your own bedroom?

I’m now sporting a decent sized bruise on my shin from just such an incident last night. My eyes popped open at 2:30am, and it wasn’t long until I realized that I wasn’t going to fall back asleep without a drink of water. So, I swung my feet over the side of the bed and attempted to shuffle toward the sink. But being in a half-conscious state with the shades pulled and the light from a new alarm clock casting eerie shadows, finding the door to the bathroom was little harder than I had anticipated.

Before taking more than a few steps, I collided with a slightly ajar door then tangled my feet in the hair dryer cord which led to a hard bump against an open cabinet drawer.

WIDE AWAKE!!

The confusion (and now pain) had my mind fully engaged, but I was still straining to orient myself to what should have been familiar and comfortable surroundings.

In hindsight, it took me way too long to figure out the remedy to my situation…

Just turn on the light.

The instant I flipped the well-used toggle I knew exactly where I was, where the sink was, and what I needed to do next.

Pretty simple, huh?

You know, we need remember the same thing when we go through seasons of darkness in our lives. Sometimes sickness, a sudden and unexpected change, loss or heartache plunge us into a confused state of mind even when we’re surrounded by things that should be familiar. Shadows of fear, anxiety and uncertainty disorient us and often leave us bruised by the unknown.

Only when we flip on the light of God’s truth are we able to accurately position ourselves and find clear and reliable markers that will help us know what to do next. While everything in your world may not come immediately into focus, you can trust that the precision and illumination of the scripture will give you clarity, stability and peace.

My God turns my darkness into light. …As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s Word is flawless; He shields all who take refuge in him. ~ Psalm 18: 28, 30

  1. Amen, Karen. Sometimes the answer is so obvious to us and turning on the light of God’s Word helps us at every turn of our life. I know I want to be in His Word every single day. All glory to HIm. Blessings, Amy

    1. Discouragement often pushes us away from the very thing that will help us – God’s Word! Sometimes we have to just do what we know is right. Thanks to both of you Amys!

  2. I could relate to this on two levels, Karen. Physically, that is my life every day as a someone losing her vision. I can relate to that pain, that bruise, the bump, the turned ankle, the murky, distorted shadows that appear somehow sinister, the disorientation in the dark. LOL. It is my constant companion! I always feel that as my physical vision worsens, my spiritual vision improves. But on some nights, I feel discouraged. And it is such a good reminder to simply turn on the light of God’s word for reassurance! A wonderful example! Thank you so much!

  3. And for the practical side, my husband plugged in a night light in our bathroom. He gets up early in the morning so it helps us every day!
